Reconnection makes us learn from the past and strengthen the connection by looking forward
Reconnecting with someone from our past makes old memories rise up and fills us with nostalgia. These memories can be pleasant, unpleasant, or both. We laugh at stupid things that happened, feel touched by experiences we shared, and apologize for our mistakes. Some of these memories come up on their own, while others need cues through conversation.
Not only looking behind, reconnecting also makes us look at the present. We catch up and ask how each other’s days are going, what we’ve been up to while we were out of touch. These create conversations and interconnected topics that we can explore further. That leads to looking forward.
Reconnecting is arguably easy. Ask for a hangout, grab coffees, or just do a video call on Google Meet. Remember: reconnecting with people shouldn’t be expensive. Money alone cannot substitute for genuine connection.
Don’t be afraid of getting rejected—the worst they can say is “no.” They may be busy, and that’s alright; you can always propose a new time or ask for suggestions. Handle rejection as a way to find other opportunities. Seek out those who are worth your time.
